Matt Clark, British artist and founder of United Visual Artists (UVA), was the speaker of the ISE 2026 Creative Keynote.

Celebrated for his pioneering work combining art, technology and architecture, Clark seamlessly blends light, code, sound and choreography to create striking works for leading cultural institutions and major public spaces around the world.

With his signature wit and bold on-stage thinking, Clark’s keynote challenged the audience to push boundaries and rethink the relationship between art, technology and the built environment at ISE 2026.

The session took place on Tuesday 3 February, from 15:30 to 16:15, in room CC4.1, and Clark delivered his keynote Hidden Order: Building a Performance-led Mapping at Casa Batlló, from Concept to Implementation. This inspiring session offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at Hidden Order, the spectacular façade mapping commissioned and produced by Casa Batlló in collaboration with UVA, scheduled for 31 January and 1 February, just ahead of the start of ISE 2026.

The commissioned work, Hidden Order, marked the 5th edition of Casa Batlló’s annual mapping, presented free of charge to the citizens of Barcelona and established as one of the city’s most significant cultural events. It used the building both as subject and instrument, with the aim of pushing Gaudí’s radical legacy even further through inspiration and reinterpretation, drawing on Gaudí’s relationship with geometry and nature. Through light, movement and sound, the façade was deconstructed and recomposed, incorporating choreography and human movement as integral compositional elements. The work moved along the boundaries between figuration and abstraction, and between the human and architecture, while responding to real-world constraints that shaped both its visual language and its technical design.

Clark’s keynote served as a case study of the Casa Batlló commission, from first impressions and concept through to research, prototyping, content systems, technical design, show control and on-site execution. He explained how UVA translated architectural logic into a controllable visual system, collaborating with a diverse team of technical craftspeople and specialists to take the work from studio testing to real-world realisation, demonstrating how constraints ultimately shaped the final composition.

Hidden Order also extended into the newly opened gallery on the second floor of Casa Batlló, evolving into Beyond the Façade, a five-month site-specific exhibition that opened on 31 January and offered visitors an immersive experience of Clark’s work. This unique space within the iconic building provided the opportunity to explore in depth the artistic process behind the mapping, combining light, movement and technology to reflect on life cycles and the interaction between human presence and architecture, allowing visitors to see themselves reflected in the work.

Matt’s visionary approach and his ability to fuse art, technology and human experience embodied the spirit of ‘Push Beyond’, our theme for ISE 2026. This extraordinary project, created by Casa Batlló in collaboration with Matt Clark, challenged us to see the world differently and inspired the community to explore new creative frontiers.
