Its latest update, Crestron Home OS 4.6, makes enjoying music on the platform easier than ever.
The smart home is much more than connected devices; it is the beating heart of a living space, orchestrating the perfect ambiance for every moment. And what defines the atmosphere more than music?
With Crestron Home® OS 4.6, music is placed at the center of everything, completely reimagining the experience. Now it’s faster, more intuitive, and more enjoyable than ever.
At Crestron, we believe that the soundtrack of a person’s life deserves a prominent place in the smart home experience. OS 4.6 is not simply an update; it’s a transformation of how a user interacts with their music, making it easier than ever to enjoy the perfect soundtrack anywhere in the home, says Michael Short, Vice President of Marketing Operations and Residential.
A refined music experience
The first thing you’ll notice is the new Music icon on the home screen. It’s not just a button—it’s a window into the home’s audio. You can see the album cover of what’s playing or a clear visual cue when everything is quiet. With multi-source playback, cover art gracefully transitions between different sources, keeping you visually connected to the music flowing through the home.
But the real magic happens when you touch that icon. The music selection process has been simplified to just four steps:
- Tap the Music icon: That first touch opens the door to a world of sound.
- Select location(s): Choose a single room, multiple rooms, or an entire floor.
- Select the source: Access your favorite streaming service or go directly to a playlist, artist, or station.
- Play: The last tap lets you instantly start the perfect soundtrack.
The Music Circle has also been added within the Now Playing icon, providing even quicker access when music is already playing and you want to add more rooms or change the source.
Multi-room audio, redesigned
The multi-room audio experience has been completely redesigned. From seamless room selection at the start to intuitive controls for adding or removing zones at any time, managing home audio is now simple. The new multi-room volume slider allows precise adjustment of each room’s volume, ensuring a perfectly balanced listening experience.
"We obsessed over every detail of the multi-room experience", explains Short. "The goal was to make it so intuitive that it fades into the background, letting the user simply enjoy the music".
This seemingly simple experience is the result of a deep dive into user behavior and countless hours of testing and refinement by the Crestron software team and the beta user group.
We didn’t just want to improve multi-room audio; we wanted to redefine it. We analyzed every step, focusing on minimizing the number of taps while maximizing control and flexibility, says Chase Bouchard, Product Owner for Software Applications.
The team explored different design proposals, testing each iteration to ensure the interface flow was as fast and intuitive as possible. "We paid close attention to the smallest details", adds Bouchard. "Things like button placement, touchscreen responsiveness, and the visual feedback the interface provides all contribute to the overall experience. For example, the new multi-room icon on the ‘Now Playing’ panel offers a clear and concise overview of grouped rooms. From there, the user can add or remove rooms with a single tap. These subtle but important details elevate the experience".
The result is multi-room audio that is not only powerful and flexible but also easy to use, allowing anyone to effortlessly create the perfect soundtrack for their home.
Favorites front and center
One of the most exciting enhancements in Crestron Home OS 4.6 is the streamlined access to each user’s favorite music. No one wants to waste time searching for their go-to playlist, artist, or station, so we redesigned the music selection process.
Now, when selecting a source, users will immediately see their favorite stations, curated playlists, and most-played artists. There’s no need to navigate through multiple menus or search for that one song you can’t get enough of. It’s all right there, just a tap away.
"We wanted to make it as simple as possible for anyone to listen to what they love", explains Bouchard. "By surfacing favorites right in the source selection screen, we’ve removed unnecessary steps and cut down the time it takes to start enjoying the music".
This change, which may seem small, has a huge impact on the user experience. It’s not just about convenience—it’s about personalization. It’s about making Crestron Home OS an essential part of each client’s home, where their favorite music is always within easy reach.
It’s the little things that make a big difference. This enhanced access to favorites is a perfect example of how we continually refine Crestron Home to deliver a more intuitive and enjoyable experience, adds Short.
