The modernization of the security system posed a major challenge.

Lipor has taken a decisive step in the digital transformation of its facilities by implementing a comprehensive security system based on Hikvision’s HikCentral platform, deployed by the technology integrator Strong Charon.

Founded in 1982, Lipor manages more than 500,000 tons of municipal waste annually from eight Portuguese municipalities. Its circular economy model is based on multimaterial, organic, and energy recovery, as well as controlled landfill, combining innovation, sustainability, and social commitment.

In this context, the technological renewal of its security systems responds to the need to strengthen facility protection without losing sight of operational efficiency or the environmental values that define the organization.

A project with complex challenges and long-term vision

The modernization of the security system posed a major challenge: carrying out a technological replacement without interrupting operations, integrating different technologies into a single platform, and ensuring future scalability. Additionally, a solution aligned with Lipor’s sustainability strategy was required.

We wanted to embrace new technologies that would make security a central part of our working relationships. We were clear about what we needed: a more reliable, integrated, and innovative system capable of growing with us, explains Miguel Lopes, Head of Security at Lipor.

The project, awarded to Strong Charon, included access control, CCTV, intrusion detection, thermal cameras, license plate recognition, and vehicle weighing, all managed from a single, simple, centralized interface. The key to this transformation was the adoption of the HikCentral Professional platform, which enables control and automation of all subsystems from one environment.

Advanced technology for proactive security

The solution includes:

  • Intelligent video surveillance with high-resolution and thermal cameras for early fire detection.
  • Multifactor access control with authentication via cards, codes, and ANPR.
  • Centralized intrusion system.
  • Integration of vehicle weighing with license plate recognition, improving traceability.
  • Real-time event and alarm management with customized report generation.

Thanks to HikCentral’s open architecture, it was also possible to integrate existing infrastructure, optimizing investment and speeding up implementation.

This case shows how technology can be integrated with operational efficiency and an ecological vision. We developed functionalities such as vehicle weighing combined with license plate recognition, in an ecosystem that unites security, protection, and operations, adds Ricardo Bessa, Vertical Business Development at Hikvision Portugal.

Tangible results and continuous evolution

The new system has enabled Lipor to significantly increase access control and traceability, anticipate risks thanks to intelligent video surveillance and advanced detection systems, and optimize operational processes through real-time data usage. Additionally, the solution’s open architecture provides the ability to adapt to new needs without changing the platform.

Finally, Silvio Rocha, Technology Director at Strong Charon, emphasizes: “We achieved a robust, flexible solution adapted to Lipor’s sustainability philosophy. The platform had to be intuitive, scalable, and integrative”.
