Leyard LED technology transforms Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall into an immersive visitor experience.
LED display technology from Leyard Europe has been installed at Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall, a landmark historic building in North East England, as part of a major renovation project completed in June 2025.
Electrosonic selected Leyard’s solution as the visual centrepiece of the building’s new exhibition space, using dynamic LED technology to vividly bring to life the history of mining and the people who shaped the region.
Founded in 1915, at the height of the UK’s coal industry, Redhills has long been a symbol of community, social progress and workers’ rights in North East England. Today, the building has been reimagined as a hub for a new solidarity economy, promoting local people, skills and creativity, while offering tours that connect visitors with its remarkable past.
Working closely with the Redhills team, Electrosonic’s goal was to integrate audiovisual technology throughout the visitor journey, enhancing the experience without compromising the building’s historic character.
The centrepiece of the exhibition space is a Leyard VDS Complete DHD196 LED videowall, installed in an 8-wide by 4-high configuration. Measuring 4.8 metres by 1.35 metres and featuring a resolution of 3840 x 1080 with a 1.2 mm pixel pitch, the display’s ultra-wide 32:9 format immerses visitors in the scene with striking visual depth, enhanced by a surround sound system that intensifies the atmosphere and sense of place.
The exhibition space has been designed to evoke the underground world of a working mine. Dim lighting, structural elements replicating pit props, and textured surfaces resembling a coal face place visitors directly in the miners’ environment. Beyond its role as an immersive heritage experience, the room is also designed as a versatile space, suitable for both presentations and commercial hire. Full integration with the main hall’s audiovisual infrastructure allows it to shift seamlessly between functions without losing its immersive quality.
The exhibition space fully achieves the goals of the renovation: giving voice to the miners and communities that shaped the region while preserving the building’s soul. Through Electrosonic’s design, implementation and ongoing support, Redhills now offers a visitor experience that is both thought-provoking and authentic, ensuring its legacy endures for future generations.
